SEXY, FUN, UNIQUE WINES MADE WITH GARNACHA FROM RIOJA
Not so long ago (barely a few decades), Garnacha was Rioja’s most beloved and idolized variety. It withstood diseases that devastated others, and it was the basis for the most popular, sought-after wines: the queen of varieties.
Little by little, low yields and vinification issues led to its dethroning by Tempranillo (more productive and easier to grow). Many of the ACCURSED / MALDITA Garnacha vineyards were grubbed up, and more than 50% of its surface area disappeared in just a few years.
A drama that turned its glory into tragedy. Today, after being insultingly underrated for many years, it returns full of meaning, perhaps to settle the score. It is still generous… but it does not forget.
La Maldita.

In the early 1970s, it was the most widely planted variety in Rioja and, in the 1980s, it covered 35,000 acres. Today, barely 10,000 acres have survived.
The accursed fall of Garnacha was quick and relentless, succumbing to the standardization of Tempranillo and its regularity. What is left, the little that remains, is due to pure varietal resilience: old, secluded vineyards, hidden in high-altitude, stony terrains, difficult to access and till. But it is a living heritage that Viñedos de La Maldita has worked hard at rescuing from its very beginning, constantly searching for areas where its spirit still lives and struggles to recover its fullness. ¡Viva La Garnacha!
